Want to know more about Propellers?

propeller is a type of a blade or a paddle or a fan that moves power power by converting motor or engine rotations into thrust. A pressure difference is produced between the forward and rear surfaces of the airfoil blade and a fluid (such as air or water) is accelerated behind the blade.

Propellers are classified by length and pitch, suppose you have purchased a propeller of 10x4.5 that means the length of your propeller is 10cm and pitch 4.5cm. Many people find difficulty to choose a propeller for their Multirotor. Here is the basic details of propellers so the people can understand how to choosing a propeller.

Generally, increased propeller pitch and length will draw more current. Also the pitch can be defined as the travel distance of one single prop rotation. Higher pitch means slower rotation, but will increase your vehicle speed which also uses more power.

When deciding on length and pitch, you need to find a good balance. Generally a prop with low pitch numbers can generate more torque. The motors don’t need to work as hard so it pulls less current with this type of prop. If you want to do acrobatics, you will need torque propellers which provide more acceleration and it puts less pressure on the power system. Lower pitch propellers will also improve stability.

A higher pitch propeller moves greater amount of air, which could create turbulence and cause the aircraft to wobble during hovering. If you notice this with your quadcopter, try to choosing a lower pitched propeller.

When it comes to the length, propeller efficiency is closely related to the contact area of a prop with air, so a small increase in prop length will increase the propeller efficiency. A good example can observe with swimmers with larger hands and feet can swim faster, but more tiring for them.

A smaller prop is easier to stop or speed up while a larger prop takes longer to change speeds (inertia of movement). Smaller prop also means it draws less current,  that is why hexacoptors and octocopters tend to use smaller props than quadcopter of similar size.

For larger quadcopters that carry payloads, large propellers and low-kv motors tend to work better. These have more rotational momentum, and will more easily maintain your aircraft’s stability.

Types of Propellers:

There are a few different types of propellers, such as plastic, carbon fibre, fiber glass reinforced, wooden etc, apart from that you need to check the propeller rotation based on your frame if you are using quadcopter frame means Quadcopters generally use two pairs of identical fixed pitched propellers; two clockwise (CW) and two counter-clockwise (CCW).

Now we will mainly focus on the type of material, how it could affect flight performance, and the value. Good props can improve your aircraft’s control-ability, increase the battery life, improve your video quality, and many other good things.

The type of material used to made propeller is also considered when selecting a propeller, now we will discuss how the type of material effect the flight performance, and values, please remember good propellers can improve your aircraft control ability, increase the lifetime of lipo battery, improve aerial vediography and many good things.

Carbon Fiber Propellers

While Choosing Propeller for multicopter you need to consider both length and pitch also you need to choose the type of material.

  • We have observed with experiments, Propellers made of Corbon fiber give better performance compared to plastic ones.
  • It produces less vibration due to its stiffness and sounds quieter too when spinning
  • balanced straight out of the box
  • They are lighter and significantly stronger than plastic when crashed, but not indestructible though.
  • Perform well under high RPM (work well with high KV motors.
  • Light weight props means less inertia, thus faster motor speed change, and the control feels more responsive.
  • Less jello in the video.

  • Expensive.
  • Carbon Fibre props has slightly shorter flight time than plastic prop of the same size/pitch prop
  • Less thrust than plastic props.
  • Because it’s tough and hard to break, when crash, the motor bearing will take most the impact.

Plastic Propellers:

Many people experiments about the performance measure of plastic propellers but few said like seem carbon prop batter than plaster and other respond like nothing to notice difference.

Plastic Propellers are most commonly used propellers as it is easily available and cheap in cost.

Provide good thrust and flight life time.

Why Wooden Props ?

Wooden propeller are expensive and heavy in weight so it is rarely used.

They might work well for FPV aerial photography with larger and more powerful multicopters, but might not as good for acrobatics, stunt flying because of the increase in rotation momentum due to heavier weight, and make them less responsive to changes in motor speed.

Beginners Advice

The  fact is, Carbon fibre props are actually plastic based material impregnating some carbon fibre, and plastic is also carbon base. I would recommend to try CF props out, if budget permits. It might improves your flight experience, but it’s not a “essential” upgrade. For beginners who are learning to fly, plastic props are more than enough, as you are likely to crash and break many props, before mastering the skills.
