Why is APM so famous?

This is because of its autonomous flying charecterstics. APM can be used by multirotor and fixwings including planes, helicopter and remote control cars. One can attach varioius other devices to this apm2.6. This is again an opensource autopilot system which won various technology awards in various compettitons. Mission planner is a excellent tool for configuring, flashing and updating firmware and other hardware.


Flash APM2.6

You can connect a APM2.6 via a mini USB cable using mission planner. You need to flash the APM based on your requirement. If its a quad then you need to select a firmware for quad and apply. This is done automatically if you have internet connection available. Once this is done you need to select your vehicle. You now have to connect to GPS and do calibration. You can perform accelerometer and magnetometer calibration. Once you connect remote control you can calibrate ESC. This APM supports upto 8 ESC that means 8 motors. Power to the APM is supplied via the ESC. Before testing the flight controller remove any propeller and check. If you want to use GPS better go outdoors and arm the APM. Once armed the GPS light will change from red to green which means it has found satellites. At this point it will store the GPS co-ordinates. APM knows where it is. 


Assign Switches to APM

You can assign 3 different switches to APM. You can assign a function to one switch. Switch A can be configured for altitude hold, switch B can be assigned for position hold and switch 3 can be assinged for return to home.

You can also program your APM to return home in case of radio failure. This is called Fail Safe. You have two options in this. Either it will land where it is or it will return to the original location.
